The 2023 scholarship application season is closed. Applications for 2024 will be posted here at the end of January 2024.
Below is the listing of scholarships that were available in 2023.
Please note: Scholarship applications must be submitted in PDF format with a complete set of papers for each application. Writing must be legible. Photos of applications taken with and sent by cell phone will not be accepted.

Applewood Resident-Sponsored Scholarship’s express purpose is to give all Applewood team members or the children of team members at Applewood, the opportunity to further their career goals through education.
The Batchelor Family Health Equity Scholarship was created by Nadia Batchelor and her family to support health equity, diversity and inclusion in healthcare. The purpose of the scholarship is to allow team members in the nursing field, who have a passion for health equity, to further their educational and professional development. One scholarship of $5,000 will be awarded.
CentraState Associated Auxiliary Scholarship program will offer three (3) scholarships each year to students and adults who live and volunteer in the CentraState service area. Two for graduating high school seniors pursuing a career in the health care field. One to an adult returning to college to pursue a career in the health care field. Each scholarship will be in the amount of $500.
The CentraState Team Member Scholarship was created with proceeds from the annual Employee Campaign. Its’ purpose is to honor the team members of CentraState Healthcare System and to provide team members assistance with their educational and professional growth in the field of healthcare. It is awarded to deserving CentraState Healthcare System team members who are furthering their education or planning to attend a nationally recognized conference or lecture to further their skills. Funds would be provided to worthy recipients for tuition, purchase of educational materials, or conference registration fees, or in other ways (taking place in 2023) that will enhance the continuing education of the recipient and benefit CentraState Healthcare System. Five (5) scholarships of $1000 each will be awarded. The scholarships will be paid directly to the educational institution or CentraState department that incurs the expense on behalf of the team member.
Maureen Driscoll Sullivan, RN Scholarship was created by Maureen Lawrence in honor of her mother, a nurse and community advocate. The purpose of the scholarship is to allow team members in the nursing field, educational and professional development, with a focus on the specialty of Maternal Child Health or Pediatrics, however not limited to those specialties, in some cases. One scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded.
Kovats Gerontology and Healthcare Management Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of Ernest Kovats by friends, family and associates of CentraState Healthcare System. The purpose of the Fund is to perpetuate Mr. Kovats’ commitment to CentraState Healthcare System and the continuing need to provide educational and professional growth opportunities to the members of its staff wishing to further their professional education and skills in the areas of gerontology and healthcare management. This scholarship is in the amount of $250.
The David Labbate Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of David Labbate by his family. The purpose of the Fund is to honor David and for his family to show their thanks to everyone in the Oncology Unit who supported him. This scholarship provides educational and professional growth opportunities to the members of staff who support Oncology Services at CentraState. Two scholarships of $500 or one scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded at the discretion of the committee.
The Selma Lopatin Nursing Scholarship was created in memory of Mrs. Selma Lopatin, wife of William Lopatin, a long-time member of the Medical Center’s Board of Trustees. It was Mr. Lopatin’s wish to establish this Fund to help continue the quality of care received by Mrs. Lopatin while a patient at CentraState. This annual scholarship is awarded to a deserving active full or part time RN or LPN member of the Nursing Staff at either CentraState Medical Center, Applewood, The Manor, Monmouth Crossing or the Family Medicine Center. Applicants must also have at least one year of service and be furthering his or her education in the field of nursing or planning to attend a nationally recognized conference or lecture in the field of their training. Two scholarships of $500 or one scholarship of $1000 will be awarded at the discretion of the committee.
The McGirr Family Scholarship was created in memory of Raymond and Lois McGirr by Robert and Lorraine McGirr and the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home. The McGirr family are long-time supporters of CentraState and created this scholarship to provide assistance to CentraState Healthcare System team members who are pursuing a training or certification program (a non-degreed program) in an Allied Health field and demonstrate a need. Scholarships totaling $2,500 will be awarded at the discretion of the committee.
The Vicki Rickabaugh & Family Scholarship was created to honor the team members of CentraState Healthcare System and to provide team members assistance with their educational and professional growth in the field of healthcare. It is awarded to deserving CentraState Healthcare System team members who are furthering their education or planning to attend a nationally recognized conference or lecture to further their skills. Funds would be provided to worthy recipients for tuition, purchase of educational materials, or conference registration fees, or in other ways (taking place in 2023) that will enhance the continuing education of the recipient and benefit CentraState Healthcare System. One scholarship of $1000 will be awarded at the discretion of the committee.
The Santoshi Nursing Education Scholarship was created by a CentraState team member to support fellow team members wishing to pursue a career in nursing. This annual scholarship is awarded to a deserving CentraState Healthcare System team member who is pursuing a career in nursing. Funds would be provided to worthy recipients for tuition, and the purchase of educational materials at the institution they will be attending. One scholarship of $250 will be awarded and will be paid directly to the educational institution.
Anna C. Stewart Smythe Memorial Nursing Scholarship was created in memory of Mrs. Anna C. Stewart Smythe, an Applewood Resident and Registered Nurse in the community. Her daughter, Mrs. Carolyn Duckett wished to establish this Fund to help continue the quality of care received by Mrs. Smythe at Applewood Estates, especially in the Healthcare Unit, as well as pay tribute to her mother’s life work as a Registered Nurse. This annual scholarship is awarded to a deserving member of the Applewood Estates or CentraState Medical Center staff who is furthering their education in the field of nursing or allied health such as CMA, CNA, LPN, RN, NP, PT, OT or PTA. Two scholarships of $2500 or one scholarship of $5000 will be awarded at the discretion of the committee.
The Alan Storm Rehabilitation & Physical Therapy Scholarship was created in memory of Alan Storm by Marilyn Tarr, his relatives and many friends. Its purpose is to honor the memory of Alan and to show thanks to everyone in the CentraState Rehabilitation & Physical Therapy Services for all they had done for Alan. This annual scholarship is awarded to deserving members of the CentraState staff that supports CentraState Rehabilitation & Physical Therapy Services who is furthering their education in Rehabilitation & or Physical Therapy. This scholarship will award 10 (ten) $1,000 scholarships to be used for educational or professional growth. The scholarships will be paid directly to the educational institution or the CentraState department that incurs the expense on behalf of the staff member.
Matthew Trancho Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of employee, Matthew Trancho, by friends, family and associates of CentraState Healthcare System. The purpose of the Fund is to enhance education for the staff of CentraState Healthcare System. This is achieved by providing funds to worthy recipients for tuition, purchase of educational materials, conference registration fees, or other ways that will enhance the continuing education of the recipient and benefit CentraState Healthcare System. Two scholarships of $500 each will be awarded.
