Student Health
School officials, nurses, counselors and other professionals in childcare make up this unique committee addressing health issues of concern to school-age youngsters, such as anger management, substance abuse, pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, and obesity.
A series of workshops are offered to school nurses on chosen topics such as First Aid Techniques; Headaches & Head Trauma; Sexual Health; Medical Crisis; Understanding Grief & Loss; Bi-Polar Disorder and Depression in Students; and Eating Disorders.
Registration for an interactive workshop for middle and high school professionals, and open to the public, “Dying to Know: Inside Teen Suicide” was overwhelming and a second session was offered to meet the demand. Topics included “An Inside Look at Issues Surrounding Teen Suicide” and “Behavioral Health Disorders in Youth and Suicide Awareness.”
“Reaching Out: Suicide Prevention in Action” will meet the needs of the more clinically oriented school personnel, including guidance counselors, child study teams, social workers, school nurses, and administrators. This workshop will enable the participants to learn about empowering children with life skills; understanding medications; exploring the connection between depression and suicide; and identifying skills and programs that address suicide awareness and prevention in schools.
Partially funded by a generous donation from the Society for The Prevention of Teen Suicide, both the “Dying to Know” and “Reaching Out” workshops are also approved for CEUs by the New Jersey Department of Education.
