Ambrose LeVan celebrated his 99th birthday on November 30, 2010 and was overwhelmed when more than 80 fellow residents, family and staff gathered at Applewood Estates to honor him at a surprise party.

“Amby” and his late wife, Dottie, moved to Applewood Estates in 1993 and quickly became active in their new community. Mr. LeVan has an extensive background in engineering and inventions, and his hobbies include photography, woodworking and stained glass. After a few moments in his presence, you’ll quickly realize that his true passion is in helping others. Lens fell out of your eyeglasses? Call Amby. Grandfather clock stopped ticking? Call Amby. Need to enhance the entertainment at Applewood? Call Amby.

Yes, Amby’s generosity at Applewood Estates includes the purchase of a new piano affording residents the opportunity to enjoy professional musicians in concert. He readily and willingly goes out of his way to make life better for others and asks nothing in return. His personal satisfaction comes from “seeing a need and fulfilling it.” Whether it’s the Applewood Estates residents piano teaching lab, Boys Town, the Salvation Army, the Alzheimer’s Association, the American Red Cross, or the Applewood Residents Assistance Fund, he sets an example by donating to worthy causes. Most recently, Mr. LeVan made a significant gift to CentraState toward the expansion of its Comprehensive Cancer Center.

During his recent birthday celebration, CentraState renamed a scholarship fund in his honor. “The Ambrose E. LeVan Scholarship Fund” is available for Applewood Estate employees desiring to further their education. Amby was instrumental in establishing and funding this scholarship in 1999, and it’s a fitting testimony to his philanthropic legacy.

It should come as no surprise that Amby sums up his feelings about helping others with this quote, “The greatest treasure you ever had was the one you gave.”
